If you're lucky enough to be in a problem-solving situation where you have the space (mentally, physically, monetarily) to take this advice: When you can't find a breadcrumb in the middle, focus on the end and the start (in that order). Ignore the chance of a solution being impossible (but don't ignore evidence of a solution being impossible - use it to think about the end, the start, or the middle.)
